Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat: On the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Singapore and China, the two countries are expected to further cooperate

Recently, the heads of relevant departments of Singapore and China met and negotiated in Beijing, China. On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Singapore, the two exchanged views on the social economy of China and Singapore and discussed the global and regional situation.

1. The 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Singapore

On March 26, Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat and Chinese Vice President Han Zheng met in Beijing, China. The two welcomed the milestones in bilateral relations such as the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Singapore and China this year. The two also agreed that an open and rules-based international order is conducive to global growth and development, including ASEAN.

According to a statement from the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Heng Swee Keat and Han Zheng reviewed the extensive cooperation between Singapore and China in traditional and emerging fields, and welcomed the important milestones in bilateral relations such as the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Singapore and China this year.

The two also exchanged views on the social and economic policies of Singapore and China and discussed the global and regional situation.

2. The two countries discussed the possibility of further cooperation

Wang Ruijie posted on Facebook that when he met with Han Zheng, the two sides discussed how to further promote bilateral relations between Singapore and China. Both agreed that an open, rules-based international order is conducive to global growth and development, including ASEAN. ASEAN and China have substantially completed negotiations on upgrading the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area.

Wang Ruijie also said: “Singapore and China have the potential to further strengthen cooperation to meet common challenges including demographic changes and aging.”

He said: “This year marks the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Singapore and China, and the 10th anniversary of the China-Singapore (Chongqing) Strategic Connectivity Demonstration Project. He looks forward to the teams of both sides working together to strengthen the partnership so that the people of both countries can benefit.”

3. Will further promote common development

In addition, according to Xinhua News Agency, Han Zheng said during the meeting that over the past year, China-Singapore relations have developed steadily and in-depth, and the series of meetings between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Singaporean leaders “pointed the direction for the development of China-Singapore relations in the next stage.”

Han Zheng said that China’s development has benefited from reform and opening up, and in the future China will continue to be firmly committed to high-level opening up and promote high-quality development.
